Dr. Hendri Tanjung was invited to speak about the role of the third sector and voluntary sector in macroeconomics in an Islamic perspective at “Macroeconomics workshop” on 26 January 2023. The Association of Indonesian Islamic Economists (IAEI) held a Workshop on Teaching Macroeconomics from an Islamic Perspective on 25 to 26 January 2023 in Bogor, West Java. This international activity was held by collaborating with various institutions such as the International Federation of Islamic Economics and Finance Education (I-FIEFE), the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) East and Southeast Asia, the Centre for Islamic Economics of International Islamic University Malaysia, and the Faculty Economics and Management, IPB University.
The workshop, which lasted for two days, aims to fill gaps in teaching Islamic macroeconomics. Apart from IPB and IIUM, the speakers came from Buraimi Oman University, University of Indonesia, Airlangga University, Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University, and Bogor University of Ibnu Khaldun. Then the second day’s workshop agenda aims to create a shared understanding of various issues and approaches in teaching macroeconomics from an Islamic perspective.
On the second day, the participants were divided into four small groups to discuss various topics of teaching Islamic macroeconomics. Topics include Economic Growth and Development, Role of Government/Public Sector and Fiscal Policy, Macroeconomic Issues of the Business Cycle, Unemployment and Inflation, as well as the Role of the Third and Voluntary Sectors.
Dr. Hendri tanjung was asked to lead group 4, with the theme the role of third and voluntary sector. In his presentation, Dr. Tanjung explained the macroeconomic cycle from an Islamic perspective, complete with pictures. He explained that Islamic macroeconomics is more complete than conventional macroeconomics.
As a result, the forum agreed on the first draft of a reference book as the main material and a guideline for teaching macroeconomics from an Islamic perspective. This book is expected to become an international reference that can be adopted by Islamic economics teaching institutions around the world.
The event also marked the official announcement of IAEI as a co-founding member of the International Federation of Islamic Economics and Finance Education (I-FIEFE), joining IsDB Institute, King Abdul Aziz University Saudi Arabia, International Associations for Islamic Economics UK, and IIU Malaysia. I-FIEFE is an international association that aims to advance Islamic economics and finance education worldwide.
